Recently, I was asked about cosmetic facial fillers for lip augmentation/wrinkle reduction and there was heated discussion about the desirability of permanence. Early in the days of facial filling collagen products were used. They had several disadvantages in that they were animal derived and lasted only a few months. The next class of fillers that came to market were the HA's (hyaluronic acid.) They were advantagious because they were composed of the same substances within the human body and did not induce an allergic response. They also lasted for 6 months to a year. This is desirable because a procedure once a year is tolerable to the average person.

Longer lasting fillers have come to the market that incorporate permanence. SO the next step would be what if I only had to do the procedure once? Wouldn't that be great? The answer is no. The trap lies in that your body is a living entity that changes and adjusts to the enviroment around it. If a permanent filler is placed into the skin, the body over a course of 5-10 years will adjust around it, This may produce a dispacement of the material or a movement that is un-desirable and impossible to remove without surgery. That is a bigger problem. The other factor is what is needed to make your appearance better in your 30's is different than what is needed in your 40's and 50's.
